I Have Questions...

Who gets the chequered flag at the F1 film premiere? Brad or Tom?

Brad Pitt, 61, and Tom Cruise, 62, appeared in London this past week for the premiere of Pitt’s new movie, F1. The duo, last seen on film together 31 years ago in Interview With the Vampire, turned out in sharp outfits for the reunion.

The photos – featuring Pitt in a forest-green Anderson & Sheppard double-breasted wide-legged suit (with ascot!), and Cruise in a sharply tailored monochromatic grey ensemble (sans tie) – highlight how well the two legendary movie stars dress for their age, height and personal brands.

“Both men look very handsome and comfortable, and very much themselves,” says Janice Meredith, a Toronto-based personal style expert. Tom has a consistent and successful uniform of trim suits using monochromatic pieces to keep his overall outfit lean without breaking up his body, which would upset the balance.”

Call Out for Q’s...

Do you have questions, too? Why is Brad Pitt dressing like a fuzzy Smurf at the age of 59? Can I still wear a miniskirt? How do I pull off stealth wealth on a budget? Who says I have to age gracefully? What is the best sex position for a bad back? Yup, way more questions. Add your question to our list at TheZoomerist@Zoomermag.com. We can’t answer all emails personally, but please let us know if you mind us using your name in the event your question is chosen for publication.

At 5’6”, Cruise chooses slim-fit trousers and does not wear a belt, which would break the line. We can also learn from his shoe choice, Meredith says: Traditional black dress shoes work to keep the line intact. “Tom’s personality fits the confidence of the elegant look he has honed. He’s not at the point in his life where he needs to try anything different.”

On the other hand, Pitt, who is 5’11”, has been having a lot of fun with dress up the past few years. He is in rebranding mode, coming out of the near decade-long tabloid brushfire of a divorce and child custody battle with Angelina Jolie. He has just recently become “red-carpet official” with his new girlfriend, Ines de Ramon, who is 27 years younger.

“Brad is relaunching himself,” Meredith says. “This is somebody no longer tied into negativity, he is having fun, working on positive traction. The colour is bold and playful. The scarf announces confidence, the opposite of hiding.”

In the past couple of years, Pitt has almost veered into the kooky zone. Zoomerist had a look at the transformation, examining his experimentation with fuzzy hats and lime-green ensembles. “This look is much more refined but still fun,” says Meredith. “Now that he is appearing on the red carpet with a partner, their clothing has to sync up.”

Both Cruise and Pitt are projecting youthful images, but more importantly, they are working within their body types and proportions. “If you have the inches in torso length and broader shoulders, like Pitt does, it gives you room to play with accessories — a double-breasted suit needs that canvas to pull it off, same as the scarf.”

Details matter. Look at Cruise’s sleeves. They are tailored within a millimetre of perfection. His tailor/stylist has chosen not to have the sleeves underneath show. Again, it is about keeping a long, unbroken, sleek line. Says Meredith: “As for sleeves, where it hits is the sweet spot of having a hint of the cuff but not too much showing when you raise your arm.”

Where the jacket lands is also a matter of individual preference, but it can affect the overall balance. Shorter jackets are in vogue for younger men. “Shorter is more on trend, and definitely youthful,” she says. “You see plenty of shorter male celebs — like Barry Keoghan and Danny Glover — wearing that look because it works so well for their height, creating interest in their outfits.”

If you look at the side-by-side photos from the F1 London red carpet, Pitt’s and Cruise’s jackets fall at the same place, proving this point. Pitt’s height means he can go longer, and be more louche with his outfit.

The male celebrity dressing masterclass here includes hair. Cruise’s longer locks make the monochromatic suit flow. Pitt likely has a buzz cut for his latest cinematic character, but it works well for the playful lounge look he has adopted here.

For shopping takeaways, Meredith says that when she takes men out to the racks, she is less focused on price and more focused on after-market tailoring to fit clients exactly. “Buy the cut that fits the shoulders,” she says. “It is a lot of work to remake the shoulder and the armhole.” For an occasional suit at a great price, she is a fan of RW&Co. For the boffo designer labels, she cites Canali and Strellson as dependable go-tos. But in general, her take is you can spend the money on a tailor versus the label to get it to fit you properly, and then upgrade the accessories.

Even back in 1994, we all knew Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise weren’t going anywhere – their star power was just too overwhelming. But how refreshing to see them – and men across Hollywood at all ages – bringing their A-game to dress up. The men’s style revolution has been the biggest fashion story of this new century, and it is great to see 60-somethings leading the way.
