We ring in this month with debuts, sequels, award nominees and one big retirement. Disgraced politician turned bestselling author Jeffrey Archer is putting down the pen, with the announcement that his new book Adam & Eve (Oct. 6), a Second World War saga of star-crossed lovers, will be his last. Meanwhile, Audrey Niffenegger is serving up a sequel to The Time Traveler’s Wife 23 years after its debut. Life Out of Order (Oct. 6), follows Clare and Henry DeTamble’s daughter Alba, who has the same Chrono-Displacement Disorder (the medical term for spontaneous time travel) as her father. The novel flits through time much as its predecessor but rather than exploring the past, this sequel offers a thought-provoking perspective on the future. From time travel to aliens: bookies and critics are taking odds that The End of Everything (Oct. 13), a disquieting, panoramic sci-fi – about a mudlark who scavenges alien artifacts – by 81-year-old genre novelist M. John Harrison will be the wild card Booker winner. And audiobook lovers, take note: Alfred Molina (who starred as the detective in Prime’s short-lived Three Pines adaptation) narrates Miss Wolcott’s Ghost (Oct. 20), Louise Penny’s latest Chief Inspector Gamache book, and will do the next four books in the famed Quebec-set series.

And now for October’s cream of the crop…
