Canada is marking its 15th annual Seniors Day, an occasion set aside to acknowledge “the contributions that older adults have made and continue to make to our families, communities and society.”
With the federal government encouraging younger Canadians to celebrate the seniors in their lives with a simple thank you, visit or act of kindness, CARP president Anthony Quinn is taking aim at increasingly divisive rhetoric that pits the older and younger generations against each other.
“The current Maclean’s cover story, The Great Generational Rip-Off, puts baby boomers on one side of a fight and younger Canadians on the other,” Quinn writes in his Seniors Day statement. “Its language of “hoarding” wealth feeds a familiar accusation: seniors are rich, greedy and standing in the way of their children and grandchildren.” His answer is a hopeful call for solidarity across all generations: “The last thing we need is adult children fighting with their parents and grandparents. We should be working together to raise all boats.”
At Zoomer, we certainly do our part to challenge that narrative and lighten the mood. And what better way to mark National Seniors Day than with a fun trivia challenge that highlights the under-appreciated generation: and big moments and remarkable people who have made – and continue to make – a lasting impact on our country.
