In the lead up to this year’s 98th Academy Awards, the producers acknowledged, “We’ve had an incredibly tough year of losses with many cinema titans passing away.” Then, they announced that Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal will reunite to honour their When Harry Met Sally director Rob Reiner and that Barbra Streisand will remember Robert Redford, possibly by singing The Way We Were from their 1973 film. A decision has also been made to extend the In Memoriam portion of the show, seeing it as “a chance for people to say goodbye.” At Zoomer, we paid our homages throughout the year.

Robert Redford

“Even as he was branded as the rugged archetype of the blond, blue-eyed, square-jawed dreamboat, he made himself at home in a staggering range of genres – while rewriting the rules of male heroism and sex-appeal, in ways that had an influence far beyond his career,” from The Wide Open Range of Robert Redford

“Watching the actor opposite other greats of that generation – including Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Dennis Hopper, Robert Redford and Canada’s Donald Sutherland – he consistently brought grit and authenticity, fierce authority and an underlying conscience to complex roles.” from The Reel Robert Duvall

Rob Reiner

“In a career that would embrace multiple genres, Reiner launched his big-screen career by pioneering one. As the godfather of the mockumentary (with This is Spinal Tap), he created a genre that would resurface in movies ranging from Borat to Best in Show, and in TV shows from The Office to Parks and Recreation,” from The Ever Essential Rob Reiner
