The earliest recorded history – carvings on ancient cave walls and temples – reveal that animals and humans have always shared a unique bond.

Way back then, animals were depicted as spiritual guides to the afterlife or shown assisting us on the hunt for food. We traditionally relied on them to protect our households, herd sheep, control pests and, in later days, to serve in the military and police forces and to help us overcome disabilities.

But it was in the 19th and 20th centuries, with the rise of the middle class, that a pet’s role went beyond simply performing practical chores. Nowadays, our pets provide emotional support, too. And whether you have a cherished cat, dog, fish, bird, reptile or rodent, these companions have become beloved members of our families, creating household menageries of close friends.

Latest figures suggest that Canadians love their pets. In 2025, it’s estimated there are 28.5 million animals living in households across our nation, with dogs and cats leading the way. This has spawned a lucrative pet industry, worth close to $10 billion annually.

So, to honour our furry, feathered or scaly friends, we dedicate the latest trivia challenge to our beloved pets.
