At 46, my body is dealing with so many irritating perimenopause symptoms (think itchy skin, major brain fog and constant fatigue) that I discounted how this stage of life is affecting my already problematic sleep. I’ve been on a variety of sleeping pills for years, thanks to depression and anxiety, so good sleep is something I aspire to. But perimenopause has thrown yet another wrench into my quest for solid, restorative slumber. The night sweats have started, and they are unpleasant. So, when I read about Lusomé, a Canadian brand that designs sleepwear using moisture management technology and cooling sheets that help to regulate body temperature, I figured the promise of sweat-free shut-eye was worth a shot.

It’s no surprise sleep – actually, lack of it – does a number on us as we age. Not getting enough can wreak havoc on our lifespan. One study published in the international medical journal QJM looked at the sleep patterns of more than 172,000 adults and found men who get adequate sleep live five years longer than those who don’t; women who have good, restorative slumber live two years more. But a third of adults aren’t well rested, which raises the risk of dementia, diabetes and heart disease, to name a few.

Lusomé sheets were studied by researchers from the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders in the department of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Findings, published in 2025 in the journal Frontiers of Sleep, found 42 percent of participants reported a reduction in the severity of their night sweats and 33 percent said their night sweats were eliminated after using the sheets for six weeks. When it came to sleep duration and quality, users slept an average of 26 minutes longer each night and fell asleep faster, and 69 percent reported better overall sleep quality.

The Backstory

Founder Lara Smith started Lusomé when her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. “She was in her thirties and her medication and treatment caused menopausal symptoms,” Smith says. “Through chemo and radiation, she was overheating and sweating every night and couldn’t sleep. It was such a crime – she was trying to save her life, and sleep is so important for healing and health, and to not be able to sleep was such a contradiction.”

Smith, who has had a long career in the fashion industry, says there were many moisture-wicking brands on the market, but they all used 100 percent polyester and chemicals in the finishing process. After two years of research and development, she and her team came up with their proprietary smart textile pajamas that doesn’t just keep you dry in the night, but has a luxury feel. “When moisture hits this fabric, it’s pulled through to the other side, leaving your skin dry.”

She didn’t stop there. For the sheets, there’s an innovative temperature-regulating cooling mechanism that holds body heat, and when you start to cool down in the night, that stored heat is released back to you, keeping you at your body’s ideal temperature.

The Product

There are a bunch of cooling sheets on the market, but few promise temperature control and luxury comfort at the same time. My husband, Peter, is also a hot sleeper who would be happy sleeping with the air conditioner on 12 months a year, so I was interested in his take, too.

These sheets – they’re 400 thread count and 100 percent long-staple cotton – are a big step up from what had been on our bed; some type of microfibre we got on sale. They’re soft, smooth and there was a noticeable shift in how I slept even after the first night. On top of my perimenopause symptoms, I take a small handful of antidepressants each day that dysregulate my body temperature, so I tend to feel hot even when I’m laying still at night. With these, I didn’t find myself constantly kicking off the top sheet and duvet just to wake up wanting them in the middle of the night, nor did I feel that uncomfortable warming sensation I often get around 3 a.m., the time when I inevitably wake up and my mind starts racing. I’ve tried the sheets wearing a Lusomé nightshirt, but also my regular oversized tees I usually sleep in, and have had the same results in both.

More than two months in, we haven’t gone back to our previous sheet sets, I haven’t been bothered by night sweats and I feel dry in the morning. My husband – even with his sleep apnea and tendency to toss and turn – also says he now sleeps more soundly. Of course, my issues haven’t been fixed entirely – I haven’t lowered the dose of my sleeping pills yet, but I am able to sleep longer than I was before. That’s a win.

Zoomer Rx

If you’re in the market to try sleepwear or sheets that promise a cooler night’s rest, there are a slew of Canadian brands to choose from, including CoolYourSweats, Hush, Benji Sleep, Luxome, Tuck and Silk & Snow, which offer bamboo, hemp, percale cotton and other moisture-wicking fabrics.

We all know how crucial sleep is, so here’s your obligatory reminder to practice good sleep hygiene: keep your bedroom as dark, quiet and cool as possible; stick to a consistent sleep schedule; use your bed only for sleep and sex; get off screens at least an hour before you plan to go to sleep; limit caffeine in the afternoon and evening; and if you’ve settled in and can’t sleep after 20 to 30 minutes, get up and read (or do another quiet activity) in another room until you’re ready to try again.
