Amid the turbulence following the American election and the bustle of holiday season prep, stories of creature encounters and connection offer heartwarming respite. For me, it happened as I was flipping through Akiko Miyakoshi’s adorable new picture book Little Shrew (now an all-ages runaway hit); I felt my shoulders relax, and realized just how healing it can be to read about animals. Whatever the species or breed – chickens, hares, chimps, dogs, parrots, bears and a disproportionate number of cats – these companions and confidantes offer comfort in chaotic times. These tales are a good antidote to doom scrolling, and you don’t have to be an animal lover to enjoy them, but it helps.
