Today, the older generation isn’t just thriving in their later years, they’re flipping stereotypes, breaking barriers, and accomplishing incredible feats along the way. With our Oldie Index, we spotlight individuals who are defying ageism, one inspiring “senior moment” at a time.

Golden Parachute

Ed Marshall last jumped from a plane 79 years ago during Second World War paratrooper training, but returned to the sky in July to raise money for Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, eventually raising $102,000. The 100-year-old from Hamilton, Ont., had a guardian angel in his pocket: a picture of his wife, Molly, who died in 2020.

Monet didn’t find success until his 30s, but Winnipeg, Man., centenarian Albert Regehr had his first brush with canvas at 98. Regehr’s landscapes were recently displayed at his seniors home’s art show, but his work is not for sale and he considers it priceless, anyway. “You haven’t got enough money to buy this,” the artist told his grandson.

When the Miss Universe pageant allowed contestants over 28 this year, 81-year-old model Choi Soon-hwa threw her tiara in the ring by entering Miss Universe South Korea. Although the crown went to a 22-year-old, the grandmother of two did walk away with a title – Best Dressed.

This veteran’s family thinks he should write a book instead of reading one. In a segregated U.S. Army during the Second World War, William Mitcham was one of the rare Black soldiers promoted to officer. For his 100th birthday, the Georgia senior’s book club conspired to surprise him with a proclamation honouring his trailblazing service.

In September, veteran British alpinists Mick Fowler (left), 68, and Victor Saunders (right), 74, friends for nearly 50 years, became the first known people to summit Yawash Sar, a remote 6,258-metre peak in Pakistan. Fowler’s advice for older climbers? “Choose a reliable, safe climbing partner like Victor, and more than anything, carry on having a good time and living the life.”

A version of this article appeared in the Dec 2024/Jan 2025 issue with the headline ‘The Oldie Index,’ p. 20.
