Not Ready to Leave Yet

Winning a playoff series despite being vastly outplayed has become a calling card for this Montreal Canadiens squad, which continues to defy the oddsmakers after dispatching the Tampa Bay Lightning and now the Buffalo Sabres from the Stanley Cup playoffs, with Richard Newhook scoring the Game 7 winner on both occasions. As he did against Tampa Bay, fired-up coach Martin St. Louis reenacted Leonardo DiCaprio’s chest-thumping scene from The Wolf of Wall Street – “We’re not leaving!”(“On n’a pas fini!”) – to a wildly celebrating dressing room.  The team’s playoff exploits are recapturing the glory of this storied 119-year-old franchise, which has won a record 24 Stanley Cups – including in 1993, the last time hockey’s most coveted prize was hoisted by a Canadian club. Montreal’s growing legion of supporters, now stretching across the land, can take a deep breath until Thursday when the quest for No. 25 continues with Game 1 in Raleigh, N.C., against the heavily favoured Carolina Hurricanes.
