When the smash-hit movie Jaws hit the big screens and frightened theatre-goers in June of 1975, a new genre was born – the summer blockbuster.

Audiences packed theatres that summer to watch the gory battle between man and great white shark. They were lured not only by the movie’s premise, but by its big-name director (Stephen Spielberg), engaging cast (led by Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider), spine-tingling plot (stay out of the water), compelling special effects (animatronic sharks) and one very memorable soundtrack (duh duh, duh duh, duh duh).

And ever since Jaws, Hollywood studios have tried to recreate this lucrative formula, treating audiences to a summer escape of action-adventures, musicals, science fiction, romances or super-hero flicks.
