Hockey executive Brian Burke chats with Alan Frew in the latest instalment of Life Frew Music, a podcast series hosted by Canadian rock legend Alan Frew and produced in partnership with Zoomer.com and ZoomerRadio.ca.
Known as one of the sport’s boldest and most influential voices, Burke peripatetic career has taken him all over the hockey map, serving as general manager of the Stanley Cup winning Anaheim Might Ducks in 2007, as well as holding executive positions with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames.
The 70-year-old Boston native speaks about growing up in a large Irish-Catholic family, going to Harvard Law School before setting out on his long and winding hockey journey, and his career highs and lows, which include winning the Stanley Cup and being fired by the Leafs. And he brings us up to date with his current role as executive director of the Professional Women’s Hockey League Players Association. He also reflects on the loss of his son Brendan, which subsequently led to his becoming an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.
And since no conversation with Frew is complete without a discussion on music, Burke shares why he loves live concerts – including a wild a wild Rolling Stones story from 1975 – plus the songs he will remember forever.
